When I bought my first coconut oil, I did it because I wanted to fry my vegetables in something trendy. Like so many others, I had scrolled through social media and been exposed to the value it potentially could add to my life. However, it was not until I started to use coconut oil as a makeup remover and my very troubled skin cleared up that I began to explore the coconut oil properties in general. Quickly, it became clear to me that coconut oil can benefit your everyday beauty routine as well as a variety of physical and mental health conditions. To make sure you get introduced to some of the best ones, in my opinion, I have collected a list of 8 coconut oil benefits for you. Previously, I have written an article on how coconut oil can be applied to your beauty routine. The following, however, will have a stronger focus on how coconut oil can benefit your health and I hope you like it.
1. Coconut oil can boost metabolism
Not only can coconut oil curb unhealthy cravings and appetite, it can also boost your metabolism and increase weight loss. Today, obesity is one of the biggest health problems in the world and recent numbers from WHO shows that 650 million adults were classified as obese in 2016. Since 1975, the figures for obesity have almost tripled. Despite the scary numbers, it is important to bear in mind that obesity is preventable. Additionally, obesity is not only a matter of calories. It is essential to pay attention to where the consumed calories are sourced from. This comes down to that different types of food and drinks impact the body and hormones distinctively. Not only will the right kind of fat help our bodies to gain new energy and support cell growth. Coconut oil can also increase satiety, which eventually will put an end to unhealthy snacking.
The unique combination of fatty acids makes coconut oil the world’s most weight loss friendly fat because it contains medium chain fat. A study showed that one to two tablespoons of medium chain fat would increase the energy expenditure by 5% per day. This equals a total of 120 calories. Due to the “thermogenic” property of the coconut oil, eating coconut oil can boost the metabolism as it kick-starts the fat burning process.
2. Coconut oil promotes healthy teeth and gums
Coconut oil is great for your oral health since it works as a cleansing oil for teeth and gums. A bright smile is something everyone wants and if you prefer to avoid a pricey trip to the dentist, it is important to look after the oral hygiene.
Over the past couple of years, coconut oil has become an essential part of my toothbrushing ritual. As an organic alternative to mouthwash, “oil pulling” has become an activity I participate in every now and then. After flossing and brushing, I swirl a tablespoon of coconut oil in my mouth for 10-20 minutes and make sure it gets into all the gaps. Once I am done, I avoid swallowing it by simply spitting it out in a plastic bag. You may already know that coconut oil will clog the drains, which is why it is essential to never spit the oil down the sink.
3. Coconut oil can fight infections
Coconut oil can fight infections and this might be why it is an effective home remedy for anything that is “wrong”. As much as 50% of the fatty acids in coconut oil is lauric acids- a 12 carbon fatty saturated acid. It can also be found in laurel oil, palm kernel oil, and coconut milk. Due to its antibacterial properties, it can also be used in extracted forms.
For medical purposes, one should always use organic, extra virgin coconut oil. According to the coconut oil expert Bruce Fife, two to three tablespoons of coconut oil will help to protect the body against bacteria and viruses. However, before self-medicating for any type of infection, it is essential to consult with your doctor.
4. Coconut oil can speed up the healing process
A great home remedy for bruises is always handy if you have been involved in a minor accident. Since it is quickly absorbed by the skin and the skin tissues repairs, the healing process will speed up. Due to this, it is great to store an extra jar of coconut oil in your house for one of those many accidents. However, applying the oil to the bruised skin is not the only way to heal bruised skin. Several studies have suggested that eating natural and organic food, such as coconut oil, can have healing properties. Not only does organic food contain fewer pesticides, it is also a great source of vitamins, minerals, water, fatty acids, amino acids, carbohydrates, and fiber.
5. Coconut oil for acne treatment
When coconut oil is used as a home remedy for acne, you are fighting oil with oil- and this might be why such kind of acne treatment comes across as different. However, coconut oil has antiviral and antifungal properties and provides a very deep moisture for the skin. As a result, the dead cells that often make the skin come across as dry and damaged will disappear as the underlying skin tissues become stronger by the coconut oil.
One of the main reasons why I became interested in the many benefits of coconut oil is because of the great impact it had on my face. When I bought my very first jar of coconut oil, I had been dealing with terrible acne breakouts for quite a while. By simply using coconut oil as a deeply hydrating makeup remover and applying the oil to my skin before I went to bed, I was able to see a massive improvement within days. Two weeks after I started my new acne treatment ritual, my face was no longer caused by inflamed skin. For the first time in almost two years, my acne breakouts were put to an end and I was able to regain my self-confidence.
6. Coconut oil can help stimulate hair growth
No one is dreaming of hair loss, and I firmly believe that the most of us enjoy having strong and healthy hair on a regular basis. Not only can coconut oil put an end to dandruff and dry scalps- it can also help you regrow your hair. In other words, coconut oil can put an end to your hair problems. Since it is a natural product stripped of toxic chemicals, it can replace the harmful hair products we all are guilty of using.
If your hair is low in protein, it will easily break and come across as dry. A study published in Journal of Cosmetic Science suggests that coconut oil is better than both mineral oil and sunflower oil. It is also the only oil that reduces protein loss. Make sure to pick a coconut oil that is extra virgin, unbleached and cold-pressed as this is the purest alternative you will find.
7. Coconut oil is great for your brain
The brain processes 50 000 to 70 000 thoughts in one day and is one of the most important organs in the human body. In order to perform, the brain needs healthy fat. Even though fat in general will give the mood a boost, coconut oil is the best kind of fat when it comes to preventing depression and decreasing stress and memory loss. By consuming one to two tablespoons of coconut oil a day, in addition to maintaining a healthy diet, you are taking major steps to keep your brain happy and focused. Coconut oil is particularly good for the brain due to the medium chain triglycerides, as mentioned above. The medium chain triglycerides are immediately absorbed and turned into ketones for fuel. The same fat will also improve focus and decrease mental fatigue.
8. Coconut oil can improve exercise performance
Everyone wants great results as fast as possible when they sign up to their local gym. Yet, most people who exercise on a regular basis knows that a strong and lean body can’t be created overnight. Like everything else in life, if you want great results, you have to put in the work. However, there are some gym hacks that can help you and improve your effort in the gym. Once again, coconut oil can benefit you.
According to Julia H. Goedecke and reported in “International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism”, coconut oil can have a positive impact on your workout session when consumed in advance. In addition to carbohydrates, the medium chain fatty acid that can be found in the oil is energy the body will take advantage of in order to increase performance.
Last but not least, because coconut oil has antiviral and anti-fungal properties, it is also a great supplement to add to your post workout shake, when your body is particularly weak and vulnerable.
What do you think about my list? Coconut oil and the benefits that come with it often goes beyond what most people realize. Is there anything you would like to add to this list? Please comment below. I would love to hear from you.
